While you already are at Machu Picchu and Cusco, you should take advantage of Peru’s two California’s worth of pristine Amazon rainforest to explore the most biologically-diverse habitats on Earth. The Peruvian Amazon has 150 rainforest lodges, so it is daunting to try to choose among them. Nevertheless, based on the four most important criteria, only one lodge stands heads and shoulders above the rest, Lago Soledad Lodge. These four criteria are: 1) accessible the same day from regular commercial jet flights; 2) completely chock-a-block full of all the largest species of rainforest wildlife, including large monkeys, Jaguars, Giant Otters, large macaws, and on and on; 3) privacy, meaning very small, private groups of guests only from that lodge enjoying the trails and the only 100% private oxbow lake right next to the intimate lodge; and 4) fully air-conditioned guest rooms. No other lodge in the Peruvian or Ecuadorian or Bolivian Amazon meet even two of these four criteria.
